What's That Brown, Yellow Spot on My Ceiling?

Water Damage What's That Brown, Yellow Spot on My Ceiling? This large water stain was a result of a water damage on the floor above. Water stains can also be much smaller.

What's That Brown, Yellow Spot on My Ceiling?

You’ve likely seen a brown, yellowish spot on a ceiling somewhere.  These colored spots are water stains, which are often caused by a roof or pipe leak above the ceiling where the spot is located.

Many DIY websites advice you to find and fix the cause of the leak and then spray paint the spot on the ceiling to cover up the stain.

But you also need to check for moisture.

Some homeowners and commercial property managers that have called us have followed the advice above but forgot to check for moisture.  The result was an attic space that remained humid and became an environment responsive to mold growth.  It was not surprising to find mold in their attics when we assessed their property.

What If I See a Water Spot on My Ceiling?

Don’t wait to get it taken care.  Since the spot is a symptom of a problem in the space above it, delaying getting it fixed may result in further damage to your property.  SERVPRO of Ellis County is a full-service provider.  If you find a water spot, we’ll do the following:

  1. Find the source of the leak and get it fixed.  It will likely be a slowly leaking pipe or small damage to your roof.
  2. Check for wet structure and materials in your attic where the leak was.  Anything that is wet will either be dried or, if permanently damaged, removed.
  3. Check for mold growth and remediate if any is found.
  4. If any portion of your structure needed to be removed, we can replace them.
